17 July 2010 - The Increadible Pronghorn

During our drive we have seen quite a few Pronghorn. These amazing animals were the topic of a question posed by our uncle Roger a few entrees back. We thought you might all be interested in learning a little bit more about these animals. The official name of the pronghorn antelope is Antilocapra americana which essentially means American Antelope Goat. The Pronghorn can run up to 95kph (or around 60 mph) which makes this animal the fastest land mammal in North America. The pronghorn antelope weighs in at 30 kg (big ones can get up to 70kg)  and has a V02 max of 300 ml/kg/min - which is nearly 4x bigger than Uncle Eric's. It is able to run 10 km in less than 10 minutes averaging 65 km per hour!!! If this pace was sustained the Pronghorn would run a marathon in less than 1hr. (Thanks Dad for the help with the calculations).

We found a website indicating that pronghorn's number one preditor are Coyotes. Also interesting is the fact that unlike deer that can jump over a fence, Pronghorn need to crawl under fence lines.
